Welcome to my website, where I introduce some of the work I’ve done as a linguist since graduating from Harvard with a degree in modern Japanese history in 1980 and finishing first in my class at the one-year Stanford Center program in Tokyo. I’ve interpreted both simultaneously and consecutively in science, engineering, patent litigation, journalism, urban planning, and art, among others. Some of the many interesting people I’ve encountered are portrayed in the “At Work” section.​​

 

ホームページを訪ねていただき、有難う御座います。経歴および最近の活動のページにある通り、当時紀尾井町にあったスタンフォードセンターを首席で卒業した後、近代日本史を専攻し１９８０年ハーバード大学を卒業しました。以来ビジネスマン・報道記者・科学番組の制作等を経て、主に科学技術・特許訴訟・芸術など、多分野の優秀な方にお会いする機会がありますが、「仕事場にて」のコーナーで幾例かご紹介します。​​

 

Sometimes I’m asked how I learned Japanese. Good teachers and nurd-level devotion in college was my foundation, but I hope I’ve learned much more in the intervening years. Vocabulary is the coin of the interpreting realm; I keep a running record of words I’ve encountered and learned to love. Podcasts are a fantastic new resource for any language learner.

 

「どうやって日本語を勉強しましたか」と尋ねられることがありますが、日本で育ったわけでもないので大学の授業に加えて、数千時間に及ぶ通訳・翻訳業務および独学を介して日本語を身につけるための努力をしてきました。馴染みない単語は必ず自分の辞書 に追加します。

 

At trials and depositions, the opposing party usually hires a “checker” to assure interpreting quality. Translation errors are called out for all to hear and see on the record – embarrassing! Attention to detail means fewer corrections and a tighter transcript. A highly skilled check interpreter colleague recently reviewed me in real time. Here is a partial list of recent court cases and arbitrations I’ve interpreted.

 

数多くの知財関連の訴訟や証言録取で通訳を行なってきましたが、法定手続きなので些細な失言でも問題の種になりうるため、証言者の発言を丹念に聞き、極力正確に通訳することを心がけます。そうすることで時間的なロスも減る上に、記録(トランスクリプト)を後で見返してみても明解となります。最近、同僚のチェッカーからこんな批評を仕事の最中にいただきました。代表的な裁判・仲裁経験のリストはこちらをご覧ください。
