Interpreter/Translator

Written translation and spoken interpreting between Japanese and English, focused on scientific and engineering fields including electronics, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals. Deep experience in patent litigation, business negotiation, diplomacy, joint development, investor relations, and public speeches by cultural, political, and business leaders. Extensive recommendations are available on request. Recent work includes nuclear fuel safety, logic circuit design, specialized printing machinery, criminal plea in drug and weapons smuggling case, extended release pharmaceutical technology, dedication of Boston MFA Japanese exhibit by Buddhist priest from Miidera temple, cancer drug development, surgical instruments, nuclear containment vessels, metal fatigue in stainless steel pipe, electron micrography in high pressure steam turbine failure, analysis, transparent filament LEDs (Nobel-winner Shuji Nakamura), video game software, electric vehicle battery separator film, high asperity ratio image capture devices, endangered species smuggling, NAND-flash memories, wind turbines, and hybrid automobile technology.

Television Producer

Research, interview subjects, and propose segments for science documentaries broadcast on the NHK (Japan public broadcasting) flagship “NHK Special” series. Subjects included brain physiology and depression, robotics, Mars Pathfinder mission and related planetary science, ecology and climate change in the northern Arctic, North Korean weapons development, asteroid impacts and chemical evolution of the universe.

Anchor, Correspondent, Commentator

Reported breaking news and offered an American viewpoint in daily studio commentary for Japanese primetime and morning news broadcasts. Covered two presidential campaigns and interviewed numerous prominent Americans including Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, and Henry Kissinger. A Yomiuri television critic called me “the rare journalist who speaks his mind.” Interpreted for Ronald Reagan during his 1989 visit to Japan.

1983-1986

Marketing Manager

Sold high-end ($1 million) US-made electronic test equipment to Japanese electronics manufacturers. Booked sales to Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, NEC, and IBM Japan.

1980-1981

Sales

Obtained first US contracts for this Osaka elevator manufacturer, totaling $14 million.
