Good interpreting is more than bilingualism… It takes concentrated listening and an ear for detail, wide background knowledge to make quick sense of what’s being discussed, and a technique for keeping it all in your head or on paper as the venue requires, as well as empathy and humor to help the parties achieve the most from their conversation. |

My formal Japanese training began at Harvard, where I majored in modern Japanese history and language. A post-grad course in electronics led me to a several year stint in the test industry at Teradyne, where I got OJT in the nuts and bolts of electronics manufacturing in both the US and Japan. I have since mediated hundreds of technical and other exchanges as an interpreter. Both Japanese and English-speaking clients give me high marks for accurately and rapidly conveying their intentions. |

In addition to five years as an on-camera US correspondent for Fuji TV, I worked in science journalism over several years with Japan’s superb public network, NHK. Curiosity and the instinct to ask questions are basic tools of my trade. Here’s an example of a surprising geology story I uncovered and developed back in Oklahoma. |
