Ronald Reagan was invited to Japan in 1989, immediately after the San Francisco earthquake. While I was interviewing him at his hotel, a group of college students on their way to help out with the aftermath appeared in the lobby. I managed to lead them into his suite and mediate a discussion, which began with Reagan saying “who would ever have thought our two countries would have become such good friends,” and allows me to state accurately that I have interpreted for a president. The photo was sent to me by Reagan’s office.
