Henry Kissinger’s oracular value
was still high in Japan when I interviewed him at his New York offices
about the state of US-Japan relations. The mood was still tense during
the period of Japanese economic expansionism, but Kissinger’s comments
ran toward “the US-Japanese bilateral strategic and economic ties
are among the strongest in the world” vein — polite reassurance
to an audience who had paid his interview fee.
